Emmanuel Jal

Emmanuel Jal is a South Sudanese-Canadian artist, actor, author, and political activist, renowned for his powerful music and advocacy for peace. Born in 1980 in Tonj, Sudan (now South Sudan), he was conscripted as a child soldier during the Second Sudanese Civil War. After escaping, he pursued education and music, using his art to promote peace and healing. Jal has released several acclaimed albums, including "Gua," "Ceasefire," "Warchild," "See Me Mama," "The Key," and "Shangah." His music blends hip-hop with traditional African rhythms, reflecting his experiences and cultural heritage. Beyond music, Jal is a dedicated peace ambassador and founder of Gua Africa, an organization supporting South Sudanese communities affected by war and poverty. His autobiography, "War Child: A Child Soldier's Story," published in 2009, offers an in-depth look into his life and journey.
